The family of a teenager who died in a 4WD crash in southeast Queensland say a special tribute to him is “a reminder that from deep loss can come meaningful change”.

A beach track has been dedicated to Harrison Payne, who tragically lost his life in a 4WD crash on Bribie Island at the age of 18.

Moreton Bay Regional Council voted unanimously to rename the Ocean Beach Access Track the Harrison Payne Track with a sign that says: “This track is dedicated to Harrison Payne, remembered for his passion for nature and the joy he brought to those around him.”

Harry died following a 4WD crash on Woorim Beach on May 30, 2021, just three weeks after he celebrated his 18th birthday.

The new track sign was celebrated by the Payne family, who held a special community day at Woorim Beach on Sunday.

Harry’s mother Kylie described the sign as an “incredibly moving tribute”.

“Having this track renamed in Harry’s honour means his name will live on in a place that held so many special memories for him and for us as a family,” Mrs Payne said.

“It’s a symbol of remembrance, but also of purpose - a reminder that from deep loss can come meaningful change.”

Harry’s father Kent said they hoped by renaming the track, it would spark curiosity for people to pause and read Harry’s story and to reflect on their own choices.

It comes after Mr and Mrs Payne last week opened up about their ongoing pain following the tragedy, and called for tougher punishments for reckless drivers.

Harry was killed when a 4WD driven by his friend Lynden Joshua Roby crashed.

Roby was sentenced to three years’ jail on November 28, 2022, suspended after nine months and his licence disqualified for three years for the dangerous operation of a vehicle causing the death of Harrison.

Pumicestone MP Ariana Doolan said the new Woorim sign would allow Harry’s legacy to resonate with drivers for generations to come.

“We cannot allow Harry’s story to go unheeded. It serves as much as a warning as it does a reminder to our young people to find the strength to change driving behaviours and how we think about safety when it comes to driving on our beaches,” she said.
