A large fire broke out at a rubbish dump north of Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the blaze at the Dakabin Waste Management Facility on Old Gympie Road.

An emergency declaration was declared at 5pm but has since been revoked.

The fire is now under control and expected to continue to burn for some time with four crews remaining on scene.

“Crews will monitor through the night so it does not spread. It is all under control and is still creating some smoke,” a QFD spokesperson said.

It’s understood the pile of rubbish has a mix of different waste, rubber, and mattresses.

The smoke affected the surrounding area into the evening.

Authorities are asking residents to close windows and doors and keep respiratory medications close by if required.

A City of Moreton Bay Council spokeswoman said they were aware of a fire in the scrap metal pile at the Council’s Dakabin Waste Management facility. “Fire crews and QPS are on site. All customers were evacuated,” she said.

Images shared to social media showed a thick blanket of smoke covering the sky.

No patients had been reported at the large industrial fire.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames as of 8.45pm.

Council and owners of the facility were to continue monitoring overnight.
