The nominations are in, the karts have been checked and the hay bales are ready to take on their second life as bulletproof racetrack barriers.
Everything is ready for the start of the 2024 Greenmount Billy Kart Challenge.
Organiser and Get Chopped Pub owner Brendan Quirey said he was ready for a solid day of racing.
“The street will be lined with hay bales and crowds, with billy karts racing down the hill on Ramsay Street, all vying for the ultimate prize, which could be pride,” he said.
About 60 karts were entered in the inaugural challenge in 2023, which proved to be a breakout success.
Momentum for the 2024 days has been building ever since, with more than 70 nominations in the bank.
“Back in the day Greenmount used to have a baker, a butcher, a bank, and all these things have gone by-the-by,” Mr Quirey said.
“Since we’ve been here we have been trying to create events and bring back interest in the Greenmount area because this is the best place to live.
“It is the best community I have ever lived in and when we run events like the Billy Kart Challenge, everyone jumps in and supports it.”
The Russell Street hills are a steep, 150m decline with a sharp 90 degree left turn at the bottom.
This treacherous corner claimed more than a few karts last year, despite the strict safety standards imposed.
“We had a couple of small injuries last year, only cracked ribs and a few things but nothing major,” Mr Quirey said.
“We have made some safety upgrades.”
