Gold Coast family shocked by two metre snake under Christmas tree

It’s not something on most people’s Christmas list, but a snake catcher has revealed why this 2.5m python was lured to a spot under a Gold Coast family’s newly decorated tree.

A 2.5m snake has surprised a Gold Coast family after it was found curled up under their newly decorated Christmas tree.

The carpet python was found in the Helensvale home, believed to have snuck inside in a bid to get out of the wet weather.

Hudson Snake Catching owner and director Tim Hudson the area under the tree offered an ideal spot for the snake because it was warm and dry.

“The energy pack underneath the tree, where you plug it in, was nice and warm so it was serving as a heat pack for the snake,” Mr Hudson said.

“They have no venom at all but they have up to 100 teeth so they can bite if harassed, handled or cornered.”

While sizeable, this wasn’t the biggest python Mr Hudson had seen in recent weeks, with one snake relocated from Advancetown caravan park measuring more than three metres.

“That was a massive snake, a once-in-a-decade long carpet python,” Mr Hudson said.

While he is on track to relocate around 1500 snakes this year, he said the Christmas period usually offers up some memorable jobs.

“This job never ceases to amaze and surprise us with the crazy things we get called too,” Mr Hudson said.

“Last year we had a green tree snake going up through a Christmas tree.”

“Last week we had to plunge our hand down a toilet to remove a spotted python that had come up through the plumbing.”

Mr Hudson said to prevent unwanted visitors in your house to ensure your doors and windows are shut and to block any gaps under doors or between window frames.
