A TENSE stand-off has developed at the troubled Southport RSL Club, with the deadline for an offer to buy the embattled property expiring.

The club’s future is under a cloud after the RSL sub-branch said it could no longer afford to pay the mortgage on the Scarborough St property.

The memorial club, which has 12,000 members and the lease to run the venue, has offered to buy the premises.

But in an email to members today, memorial club president Mark Tull said the “generous offer” to purchase the property expired at 5pm on Monday.

“The Memorial Club received no confirmation the offer was either accepted, rejected or a counteroffer made by that time,” Mr Tull wrote.

“We will continue to work with the Sub-Branch with this offer and keep you updated on the progress of the issue.

“Our highest priority is for the ongoing support of our members and staff and that of the veteran and Southport communities.”
