A truck driver has died after being crushed by his vehicle on the Gateway Mwy in Brisbane’s east Tuesday morning, in an incident that caused massive peak-hour delays
The incident, which occurred at Belmont near Old Cleveland Rd around 5am, closed two northbound lanes with congestion stretching close to 20km and delays of over 90 minutes.
Police said the male truck driver was rolled over by his vehicle when he pulled over to inspect it near the on-ramp at Old Cleveland Rd.
“The man sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene,” police said in a statement.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
The lanes remained closed for almost four hours, reopening around 9am.
Traffic delays had eased to just over 20 minutes by 9.30am, with traffic was still congested on the Gateway Mwy between Beenleigh Rd at Kuraby and Illaweena St at Karawatha at that time.
Surrounding streets were also congested as motorists attempt to access or avoid the motorway gridlock.
Commuters on Mt Gravatt Capalaba Rd leading on to the Gateway are also experiencing 20 minutes of congestion along a 4km stretch at 9.30am.
On the Pacific Mwy, roadworks caused 40 minutes of heavy traffic this morning for northbound commuters over a stretch of 18km, from Juliette St to Slacks Creek.
