There have been plenty of imitators and more than one “authentic” recipe, but a Brisbane eatery has taken its dupe of a classic Sizzler delight to new heights by procuring an actual cheese toast machine from the defunct all-you-can-eat icons.
Already a cult favourite for its delicious burgers, parmies, wings and ribs, Frittzenberger in South Bank is looking to cement its status as a Queensland dining institution by giving away slices of the cheesy goodness for free with any burger or main from June 10-16.
The machine was purchased by a friend of the Fritzenberger team at an auction when the Maroochydore Sizzler closed in 2020, who then sold it on to the eatery.
“The team were very excited at the procurement of the machine and to offer the iconic item to our customers,” a Fritzenberger spokesman said.
Prepared with “Parmigiano Reggiano with crystal salted butter on thick, white bread”, the trick to nailing the original Sizzler cheese toast flavour comes from the original machine.
“We’ve stayed true to the iconic recipe, but we’ve used higher quality ingredients to really intensify the flavours,” Fritzenberger executive chef Sebastien Calais said.
“There may never be a better way to do it.”
