Broncos kick off Michael Maguire era with win

Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has dished the dirt on Corey Oates in a hilarious on-air exchange with his former teammate.

Joining KIIS 97.3 radio team Robyn, Kip and Corey Oates on Monday morning, Reynolds opened up on long-serving NRL winger Oates, who retired at the end of 2024 after 216 games for Brisbane.

When asked how Oates, 30, would hold up watching on this season, Reynolds spilt on a nervous habit of his former colleague who in January signed on as a radio co-host.

“I think he will enjoy actually, obviously his body is going to be feeling a lot better than what it was this time 12 months ago – (though) he might not have any finger nails by the end of the game,” Reynolds said.

“I’m sure he will obviously find a way to cope and he will be up there talking the ears off someone certainly.

“Get a rain jacket, it will be sunny and not a cloud in the sky but you will need a rain jacket. He will be spitting that much.”

Oates interjected, insisting “I don’t spray” but admitted to chewing his nails.

“When I watch, I get nervous and get the shits,” he said.

Halfback Reynolds was also questioned about his relationship with his former teammate.

“I love being around Oatesy for about five minutes and then I get sick of him,” he joked.

“As soon as I am not near him I want to be near him, then when I am with him I want to get away from him.”

Reynolds said Oates is “extremely sensitive” when talking about “his golf or his punting”.

“He would bet on two snails racing that bloke,” he said.

Co-host Robin Bailey chimed in on Oates, saying he is “only going to get upset when he loses and he will talk so much you will let him win.”

“And when he has to shout a coffee he will complain about that,” Reynolds said.

The Brisbane skipper was also asked by Kip Wightman earlier on in the show how the Broncos would fare in 2025.

“We have had a really good pre-season, obviously new coaches, coaching staff as well. The addition of Benny Hunt has been fantastic,” he said.

“Things are looking good (even though) obviously we haven’t played a trial yet so we will know a bit more once we get through the trials.

“The excitement is building throughout the town.”
