Former Brisbane Broncos star Corey Oates has revealed his next career move after announcing his retirement from rugby league earlier this year.
Oates announced his retirement from footy on the Robin and Kip KIIS 97.3FM in October, saying he had known for a while it was time to let go.
The 29-year-old has now announced a shock move to breakfast radio and will officially join the pair on air, despite rumours circling that the show could be in the firing line of a major overhaul.
“I’m absolutely stoked to be joining Robin and Kip in the morning. I can’t believe I get to have this much fun every day as a job! The whole KIIS 973 team has been so supportive and I can’t wait to bring on 2025,” Oates said.
Oates is a household name in Brisbane, thanks to a 12-year stint with Broncos and featuring in nine State of Origin games for his home state since 2016.
Since Oates announced his retirement from professional football, Robin and Kip have been helping him find his new job on their daily segment “find Corey a job”.
“Over the last couple months Corey we have been talking about what you’re going to do next year, as your career has wrapped up as a footballer. We gave you lots of great options we tried out hairdressing, counselling,” Kip said.
“Real estate and stand-up comedy which I thought you were brilliant,” Robin said.
But it seems Breakfast radio has been the job that has stuck and he will remain on air with the duo for the rest of the week and return in January next year.
Robin asked Oates how he is with early alarms now he is set to join the duo from January onwards.
“I still wake up at 5 today and that will probably be for the last time for a while … I am not a morning person at all,” Oates said.
“Well welcome to the show,” Kip said.
“I am just going to wake up a bit earlier... Tegan does a lot of stuff in the mornings, I just wake up and feed myself and get my body going,” Oates said.
Oates admitted he had hoped golf could’ve been his next calling after falling in love with the sport.
“I played golf last week. I fell in love with it hey and I thought maybe this could be me,” he said.
“I had a mate say no mate, so that’s just not an option unfortunately.
“I’ve decided I am going to stay here with you guys, what do you reckon.
“We would love that,” Kip said.
On the appointment, Duncan Campbell, ARN Chief Content Officer said he is thrilled to welcome Oates to the KIIS 97.3 Breakfast team.
“Corey is a well-known and loved Brisbane personality, and his energy and humour make him a natural fit for Robin & Kip.” Mr Campell said.
“Corey has been a long-time friend of the show, and we know listeners will enjoy getting to know him in this new role. This team has fantastic chemistry, and we’re excited to see how they connect with Brisbane audiences.”
