A former Bandidos bikie involved in the infamous Broadbeach Brawl has walked from court over a “heinous” and vicious attack that left a man with a traumatic brain injury after he complained about motorbikes ridden on private property.

Brisbane’s Supreme Court heard Jarrod Kevin Anthony Brown, who by that stage had already left the Bandidos, attacked the man in his home armed with a metal bar while an accomplice wielded a knife.

About a week earlier Brown, 37, was riding a dirt bike on vacant land at Logan Village when the victim, who lived next door, came out and yelled that it was private property.

In the early hours of November 14, 2020, Brown and another man went to the victim’s home where they brutally attacked him after kicking in his front door.

Brown hit him multiple times to the head and body with a metal air pressure gauge and attempted to strangle him with it, the court heard.

As the victim called out to his dogs for help Brown told him the animals would not be coming to his rescue.

The accomplice, who remains unknown to authorities, struck the victim with a knife to his jaw and neck.

After they left the man retreated to his bed where he was not discovered until 4pm by neighbours.

However the court heard Brown had returned earlier that day to do burnouts on his bike on the man’s property.

The victim spent 16 days in hospital, where he underwent surgery and stayed in intensive care, suffering from multiple broken ribs, scalp lacerations, a deep laceration of the left jaw down to the bone caused by the knife wielded by the accomplice and a fractured skull.

The traumatic brain injury was deemed moderate to severe because it was associated with bruises, bleeding and fractures, the court heard.

The victim attended a brain injury rehabilitation unit to assist with vertigo, speaking trouble and left hearing loss. He never returned to his unit where police found a bloody scene, the court heard

Four days later police attended Brown’s motorbike repair shop just a few hundred metres away and found a blood soaked jumper matching the victim’s DNA.

Brown was initially charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody for three years until his release on bail in November 2023.

He pleaded guilty early this month to a downgraded charge of malicious act with intent, burglary and failing to provide police with access to your mobile phone

The court heard the matter was delayed due to DNA testing being pursued by the prosecution.

Crown prosecutor Stephen Muir sought a sentence of 10 years and a serious violent offence declaration if less jail was imposed saying the victim was “lucky to survive the attack”.

“This is a heinous and extremely serious example of violence committed within a home invasion,” he said.

Barrister Matt Hines said his client was no longer the man he was at the time of the attack.

Brown’s criminal history included a three month sentence for riot over his role in the infamous Gold Coast bikie brawl where dozens of Bandidos stormed onto the busy Broadbeach dining precinct on September 27, 2013 looking for a foe.

“His history, in part, is linked to his connections with a bikie gang called the Bandidos,” Mr Hines said.

“He has undertaken 10 very expensive and painful sessions to get this tattoo or insignia removed from his back.

“He is not the man who he was. This is a man who has put his life in order.”

Brown left the OMCG in 2019 but was having difficulties with work and family and using more than an ounce of cocaine a week when he attacked the victim, the court heard

“In November 2020 you exacted revenge for nothing, for a matter of triviality, for a matter others in the community would shrug shoulders and walk away,” Justice Michael Copley said of the attack.

“(It) was a cowardly attack and the violence was both disgusting and gross

“You’re a person of bad character. But you have also, in my view, demonstrated something of a worthy character in relation to your conduct whilst you have been on bail.”

Justice Copley said Brown’s 19 months on bail with only one breach and the counselling he had undertaken was evidence of rehabilitation.

Despite not showing any concern for the victim in the hours after the attack Justice Copley accepted he was now remorseful.

He regarded the pleas as early, having been first offered nearly two years ago.

Brown was sentenced to five years jail immediately suspended and ordered to pay $5000 in compensation as had been offered.

Three years of pre-sentence custody was not declared as time served. Justice Copley decided against making an SVO finding the protection of the community did not require Brown to serve 80 per cent of his sentence in custody.
