Looking for somewhere to go for a tasty weekend dinner or lunch? Here are five top ramen spots to try from Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Ramen Kann Woolloongabba
Sit down and slurp away at warming bowls of traditional Nagoya ramen at Ramen Kann, where the soup options are mouth-watering and the noodles are lovingly handmade. Whether your preference lies in a perfectly umami original paitan chicken broth (their specialty) or in their drool-worthy spicy deluxe, Ramen Kann is serving some seriously comforting bowls. While many ramen joints specialise in the creamy tonkotsu pork broth, Ramen Kann offers a new experience for its hungry diners. Ramen Kann’s owner, a DJ known as Kann Xmas, has certainly perfected his point of difference, and man, does he deliver.

Beppin Ramen and Cake Brisbane CBD
This little Brisbane CBD gem seamlessly brings together two of arguably the best foods offerings from Japan – ramen and patisserie. Beppin has more than 15 varieties of ramen to choose from, not to mention the traditional snacks, sides and soupless salad ramen on offer, plus their daily collection of sweets. From their wagyu ramen, loaded up with 100g of 7-9 score wagyu, thick noodles, black fungi and beetroot chips to their clear lemon and chicken ramen and everything in between, there’s more than enough choice for all palettes.
And for dessert? Indulge in fluffy matcha cakes, basque cheesecake or their signature Beppin cream puffs.

Neon Ramen, Everton Park
Nothing embodies the pulsing streets of Tokyo more than neon lights, quality ramen and a healthy dose of anime, and this cyberpunk-themed joint has the lot. It’s hard to outline one specific standout feature of Neon Ramen, maybe it’s the fact their vast menu is entirely plant-based. Whatever it is, it is working for them.
Owner Bella might describe it as a “work-in-progress” rather than a “proper restaurant”, but it is routinely packed with adoring diners. Perhaps my favourite thing as an (almost) reformed fussy eater is their ramen is build-your-own, giving guests full control over their dish, with seven broth varieties and eight protein options.

Umami Ramen, Maroochydore
Umami Ramen in Maroochydore is a true trendsetter. Touting themselves as the first of their kind on the Sunshine Coast, it has developed a real cult following hunting for a fix of their specialty fare. The team here offer eight different soup varieties, from the traditional tonkotsu topped with char siu pork, egg and mushrooms to the spicy, sesame-flavoured tan tan ramen loaded with pork belly, bok choy and shallots, to the mushroom, soymilk and kelp vegan ramen complete with grilled lotus root, fried onion and wood ear mushroom. You also can’t look past their lunchtime-only Shake Shake ramen, which is all the bits without the soup and served in a to-go cup.

Ramen Kyo, Mermaid Beach
Just a baby on Gold Coast’s dining scene, having only opened early this year, Ramen Kyo is already smashing expectations. Their menu exudes a fresh modern energy, not often seen in ramen bars. A step through the doors into a crisp, brightly lit white restaurant with black accent chairs and a hint of greenery is just the first sign diners can expect something different, and that’s before you get a chance to peruse their short but splendid menu.
Their signature broth is a lighter fresher variety than the more commonplace pork tonkotsu, though still just as creamy, made with chicken and scallops boiled long and slow in the traditional way.
