Police say there are no investigations underway into the cause of a fire which torched Harriet Island in the middle of Bundaberg on Saturday night after what many believe was an act of arson.

The inferno erupted overnight Saturday, with the large fire lighting up the night sky on the Burnett River.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said Saturday the blaze was inaccessible to crews and would “burn out”.

“It’s not threatening anything, everything is safe,” she said.

“It will burn out.”

She said the fire was creating smoke in the area.

“Residents are advised to close doors and windows and keep medications close by if required,” she said.

“It is burning in inaccessible land and no properties are under threat.”

She said QFD had no details on how the fire started, but community members suspected it was an act of arson.

“Kids with flares caused it. Not a back burn apparently,” a woman posted online.

“Someone threw a flare which caught the bush on fire. So mature Bundy, well done,” someone else said.

On Monday police said they were “not currently investigating but will liaise with QFD”.
