An inmate who escaped from a low-security South East Queensland prison is back behind bars after an alleged crime spree.

Mitchell John Connor, 38, allegedly escaped from Palen Creek Correctional Centre, west of the Gold Coast, on May 27.

Five days later Connor allegedly stole a Mercedes-Benz from an address in Bell St at Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point.

He was undetected for another week until Sunday on 2am, when the stolen vehicle crashed into several parked cars in Tristania Way, Mt Gravatt East.

Witnesses told police the driver had fled on foot.

Police allege Connor fled to nearby McDonald’s Carina Heights in search of another vehicle, assaulting a rideshare driver to steal his vehicle before being stopped by a bystander.

He then allegedly fled to Pine Mountain Rd, forcing his way into a number of homes which he ransacked in search of car keys and assaulted one resident.

Police arrived at the residence at about 2:40am and took the man into custody in the rear courtyard.

Connor has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of enter dwelling with intent, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of robbery, one count each of receiving tainted property, fail to remain at the scene of an accident and drive with court cancelled driver’s licence.

Investigations are ongoing and further charges are expected before he appears at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
