Queensland boy's bone marrow transplant left on tarmac

A critically ill six-year-old will be admitted to hospital today to undergo ‘brutal’ conditioning for a bone-marrow transplant, following a bungle that almost cost him his chance for the lifesaving treatment.

The Courier-Mail reported last week that a bone-marrow transplant for Mateoh Eggleton was left on the armac in the US, leaving the sick little boy’s life in limbo.

After a push from the Australian Bone Marrow Registry the cells were urgently flown to Brisbane and tested to see if they were viable. Thankfully they were.

Mateoh, from Upper Coomera, will now undergo nine days of “brutal” conditioning which according to his mum Shalyn Eggleton will be his hardest fight yet.

“The conditioning will wipe out his whole immune system to prepare his body to hopefully not reject the transplant,” Ms Eggleton said.

“My little boy is going to be at his sickest with already being told by teams to prepare for ICU and ventilators.”

Ms Eggleton who is a single mum to four children, has asked the public to consider her family during these tough times and donate to her GoFundMe.

“This road we are about to go down is one we can’t go alone,” Ms Eggleton said.

“From hospital parking, travelling, having three other children and maintaining a ‘normal life’ it’s time I reach out and desperately ask for help.”

After the nine days of conditioning Mateoh will undergo the transplant on March 13 and then 100 days of strict isolation to give his body the best chance of accepting the cells.
