A man remains in a Sunshine Coast hospital after he was trapped in a car after it was completely flattened by a truck on the Bruce Hwy south of Gympie yesterday.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the crash on the southbound lanes of the Bruce Hwy at Federal on Monday at 4.30pm.

A man, understood to be in his 30s, was trapped in the car.

The paramedic spokeswoman said the man was eventually freed and flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition with head and leg injuries - where he remains in a stable condition.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said five firefighting crews were called to the crash between the car and the stationary truck.

She said crews worked for about 30 minutes with hydraulic equipment to free the man.

He was out of the vehicle by about 5.10pm.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said officers were at the crash, south of Coles Creek Rd, and had closed the southbound lanes of the highway to allow for the rescue helicopter to land.

She said traffic was diverted north of Mary Valley Link Rd to the Old Bruce Hwy as emergency services worked at the scene.

The police spokeswoman urged motorists to be patient and the diversions would affect travel times.
