Brisbane Broncos prop Corey Jensen is pulling out all the stops to be there for his mum who is battling invasive breast cancer.

Brisbane Broncos hardworking prop Corey Jensen admits being “a bit of a softie”, especially when it comes to his mum, who is battling invasive breast cancer.

The eldest of seven children, Jensen says being the first born carries extra responsibility and he is determined to be there for his Bowen-based mother Nicole.

“It’s hard not being able to get home much, but I call her every second day,” he said.

Jensen, 29, says he was shocked to learn Nicole, 52, had stage-two cancer, detected by an annual mammogram.

“I was playing a game last year and Mum rang my wife (because) she didn’t want to tell me before the game, but when she did later, it threw me,” he said.

“I didn’t know what to think or say, but Mum won’t let anything get to her. She’s a stubborn one.

“She’s had a lumpectomy and two weeks of radiation, which was rough, and some days are better than others.”

Jensen and his vet wife Shannen are taking part in the International Women’s Day Fun Run, presented by National Storage, on March 12.

The sold-out Brisbane event is hoping to raise more than $1.75m for breast cancer research and services at Mater hospitals across Queensland.

Others who want to join in can complete a 5km virtual run from March 6-12.

Almost 3200 participants have already signed up, with teams in Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Mackay, Toowoomba, the Redlands and on the Gold Coast.

“Knowing what Mum’s gone through, it’s pretty scary, and there are so many affected (by the disease),” Jensen said.
