Brisbane weather: Inner-city waterfalls, as triple-digit falls pelt Qld coast

The triple-digit rainfalls that inundated parts of the southeast on Monday night have left their mark in spectacular style in the heart of the Brisbane CBD. SEE THE VIDEO

Double digit falls this week have created inner-city waterfalls around Brisbane, as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts more rain this weekend.

A total of 35.4mm fell on Brisbane in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, with the deluge creating waterfalls on the cliffs behind Howard Smith Wharves riverfront brewery Felons.

Another 52mm fell at Mt Coot-tha Botanical gardens that same day, while the southeast’s heaviest falls were seen at Karragarra Island (149.3mm), Carneys Creek (138mm) and Ormiston College (133mm).

Double-digit falls continued along the southeast Coast yesterday with 21mm falling at Picnic Creek on the Sunshine Coast, 18mm at Moreton Island and also at Oyster Creek near the New South Wales Border.

Further north, falls of up to 175mm pelted towns between Cairns and Innisfail spurred by the lingering effects of ex-Tropical Cyclone.

“In between cairns and Innisfail there were a couple of sites with over 100mm but most of the rain gauges were around 50mm,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matt Marshall said.

Mr Marshall said the wet weather should subside in the southeast with the chance of “a bit of sunshine as we head into the weekend”.

“There’s a few showers hanging around at the moment, but just some light stuff,” he said.

Showers could return to the southeast coast on Saturday “building up again later in the weekend and into next week”.

Rainfall should also subside across northern Queensland as Kimi – now a tropical low – continues to wane, Mr Marshall said.
