BRISBANE City Council has backed a move that would give councils a slice of the millions of dollars in revenue generated from the state’s speed cameras.

As The Courier-Mail revealed today, the Local Government Association of Queensland will lobby the State Government for councils to be given a 10 per cent share of speed camera revenue generated on local roads.

Last year, the State Government raised over $93 million from fines issued from mobile speed cameras.

Brisbane City Council transport committee chairman Adrian Schrinner offered his support for the plan, saying residents expected speed camera revenue to be used for road safety projects.

“There’s a lot of money collected through state government speed cameras on council roads,” he said.

“None of that money comes back to making council roads safer.

“We’re simply saying that to meet community expectations there should be at least a portion of that money coming back to local councils to make roads safer.”

Council is set to move a motion at the LGAQ’s annual conference this week, calling for a dedicated road safety fund for local councils that would be paid for by the state.

Cr Schrinner said speed camera revenue could be used as a way to pay for the fund.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey insisted councils already received plenty of money for road safety projects.

“We provide $70 million a year to support council roads projects under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme,” he said.

“It provides important funding assistance for regional councils with large road networks but relatively small ratepayer bases.”
