Queensland’s worst red light runners have been revealed, with drivers in Brisbane’s congested CBD proving to be the biggest risk-takers.

From January 1 to October 31 2020, more than 22,000 infringement notices were issued by red light cameras across Queensland, while nearly 4,000 were issued by QPS Divisions.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the worst police districts for red light offences – not including camera infringements – with Brisbane CBD taking out the unenviable title with 418 infringement notices served out by QPS to risky drivers.

Upper Mount Gravatt proved to be the second highest area, with 198 infringements in the same time period.

Boondall recorded 190 red light runners, Coomera had 154 and Broadbeach had 140.

In the same time frame, there were 22,836 infringement notices for red-light runners caught on camera, although the data cannot detect which areas they came from.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesman said the department has been trialling ‘Hold the Red’ technology at four southeast Queensland intersections since 2019, and the risk of crashes at those intersections has reduced by 33.5 per cent.

Two of the intersections are in Brisbane – Calamvale and Aspley – and two on the Gold Coast – Broadbeach Waters and Ashmore.

“An independent report by Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland found between 2018 and 2020, there was a significant reduction in crashes related to running a red light at these intersections,” he said.

“We are now investigating installing Hold the Red at other intersections across Queensland.”

RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said running a red light in Queensland will cost the driver a $400 fine and three demerit points.

“Whether you’re in a hurry, or not paying attention, there’s never an excuse for running a red and the consequences could be deadly for cyclists, pedestrians or other motorists,” she said.

“The yellow light means stop if it’s safe to do so. Many people believe the yellow light is the end of the green phase but it is in fact the start of the red phase of the traffic lights.”

The road toll of lives lost so far this year in Queensland is 31, more than double what is was last year at 12.

“We’ve already seen too many lives lost on Queensland roads this year and we need all road users to play their part by paying attention and practising safe driving behaviour at all times,” Ms Ritchie said.
