Alexey Tukavkin, 45, accused of transporting drugs and possessing a firearm

A man has faced court on multiple charges, including firearm possession, after police allegedly swapped five kilograms of meth he was carrying for another substance before intercepting him in a Brisbane suburb.

Police intercepted Tukavkin at Chandler on March 27 in a vehicle allegedly containing five kilos of substance that police had previously swapped for five kilos of meth.

An alleged drug transporter accused of possessing handguns has been granted bail.

Alexey Tukavkin, 45, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he applied for bail which was opposed by Queensland Police.

Police intercepted Tukavkin at Chandler on March 27 in a vehicle that when searched revealed five kilos of substance that police had previously swapped for five kilos of meth they say had been passed on to the defendant by another man

An amount of cash was also found in Tukavkin’s vehicle, police say.

A vehicle driven by another man in convoy with Tukavkin contained 10 kilograms of substance that had been swapped for 10kg of cocaine by police.

Police also searched a Capalaba storage shed where they allege they had previously seen Tukavkin enter.

Inside the storage shed police located two handguns and ammunition.

Tukavkin is charged with four counts of possessing schedule 1 drugs in excess of schedule 4, two counts of possessing drugs and one count of possessing weapons.

His solicitor Zoe Kansky, of Phillips Crawford Lawyers, said her client had the presumption of bail and had no criminal history.

Ms Kansky said he was not accused of being involved in any part of a wider alleged drug scheme.

“He’s not alleged to have had any other or been found with any other times to indicate that he has any higher level of involvement with the operation other than what he was located within the vehicle,” she said.

Ms Kansky said the Birkdale man had been born in Queensland and had strong ties to the state.

Magistrate Rosemary Gilbert said Tukavkin had allegedly taken delivery of a large quantity of drugs albeit an inert substance substituted by police.

“Nevertheless … it is alleged a very large quantity of substance has been transported by you,” she said.

However she found suitable bail conditions would reduce the risk of Tukavkin fleeing the jurisdiction or committing further offences.

He was granted bail with conditions he surrender his passport, have no contact with the co-accused, not attend an airport or leave Queensland.

The matter was adjourned to April 22.
