$50m boost for suburban sport grounds readying Brisbane for Olympic push

Brisbane City Council has announced a huge boost in funding for suburban sport in a hope to cement the River City’s Olympic Games bid. See where the money will be spent.

Brisbane suburban sporting grounds will receive a huge boost with $50 million to be dedicated to upgrades to cement the city as an Olympic destination.

The River City is well and truly firming for the 2032 Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee proposed Brisbane host the games.

The Brisbane City Council will make the large investment as a part of the 2021-22 budget, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner saying it will future-proof suburban grounds for future generations.

“With hosting the 2032 Olympics in reach these suburban sporting grounds could well be the training grounds of our future Olympic stars working towards representing their country at a Games held in their home city,” Mr Schrinner said.

“This significant investment in our sporting facilities will not only maintain existing sporting grounds, it will also ensure they are high-quality facilities.”

The Council will invest $1.2 million over three years at Chelmer Sports Group, $750,000 at Giffin Park in Coorparoo and $459,000 Emerson Park in Grange.

“The Budget will also include more than $19 million for new sports parks, including the Nudgee Recreation Reserve and $16.8 million for maintenance and improvement works at existing sporting clubs in our suburbs,” Mr Schrinner said.

The budget will be released on Wednesday.
