EXCLUSIVE: ONE of the Gold Coast’s busiest roads could be extended to six lanes if the LNP is re-elected, but is it really a priority?

Major fix for Coast’s worst road

BUNDALL Rd would be widened to six lanes, Nerang St stretched to four and major intersections across the Coast upgraded if the LNP is re-elected.

The ambitious plan would tackle more than 8km of major congestion route through the city’s middle north-south thoroughfare between Southport and Broadbeach Waters and increase capacity at major intersections at Ashmore, Carrara and Merrimac.

It would also double the vehicle capacity of Nerang St, where light rail works wrapped up just six months ago.

No time frame has been specified for the project, which spans five electorates.

The Member for Southport Rob Molhoek said the proposal would ease congestion across the city’s suburbs.

“Our plan will include the expansion to six lanes of Southport-Burleigh Rd and four lanes on Southport-Nerang Rd between Southport-Burleigh Rd and Scarborough St,” Mr Molhoek said.

“We will also upgrade five key intersections on Smith St Connection Rd, Nerang-Broadbeach Rd and Labrador-Carrara Rd, to meet growing demand over the next decade.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said the projects were part of the party’s asset-leasing program.

“If elected, the Newman LNP Government will deliver our Strong Choices plan that will pay down the debt and deliver an extra $1.5 billion in job-creating road projects in Southeast Queensland,” he said.

Member for Surfers Paradise John-Paul Langbroek said the project would create 800 construction jobs.

A re-elected Newman LNP Government has promised:

● An upgrade to six lanes and intersection improvements on Southport-Burleigh Rd between Smith Street Connection Rd and Nerang-Broadbeach Rd

● An upgrade to four lanes on Southport-Nerang Rd between Southport-Burleigh Rd and Scarborough St.

● Five intersection upgrades on Smith St Connection Rd (at North St-High St), Nerang-Broadbeach Rd (at Gooding Drive and Rio Vista Blvd) and Labrador-Carrara Rd (at Currumburra Rd/Southport-Nerang Rd and Currumburra Rd/Ashmore Rd/Ross St).
