'I have listened to the message': Crisafulli withdraws Qld treaty support

Robina councillor Hermann Vorster will quit the Gold Coast City Council at the March election after being chosen as the LNP’s new Burleigh candidate.

The two-term councillor was selected by the Opposition as its new standard-bearer in the marginal southern Gold Coast seat which the party has held for 11 years.

He will replace the outgoing incumbent MP Michael Hart who announced his retirement from politics earlier this year.

Mr Vorster will not contest the council election in March but will remain in office until then before devoting his time to campaigning.

“As a councillor I talk with a lot of people and hear the issues most important to them and they feel the Palaszczuk Labor Government has stopped listening,” he said.

“They’re concerned about the increasing cost of living, youth crime, health wait times and the rental crisis.

“If elected, I will dedicate myself to doorknocking the whole electorate, as I have done as a Councillor, to ensure I have the right priorities for Burleigh’s future.”

LNP Leader David Crisafulli praised Mr Vorster’s campaigning abilities.

“Hermann has always been driven to get a better deal for locals,” he said.

“Community safety, better health services and the delivery of essential infrastructure are priorities for Hermann and the LNP at a time when the population is surging, and cost of living is rising faster than ever before.

“With so many challenges facing the people of Burleigh, Hermann will be relentless in his fight to protect the lifestyle locals expect and deserve.”

Mr Vorster, a former young LNP president, was first elected to the council in 2016 and was re-elected again in 2020, during which time he has served as a committee head.

He has been an outspoken critic of the state government over youth crime, transport and development.

The state election will be held in October 2024.
