Three men have been arrested in Sydney after a tip-off led to police discovering more than 5000 cannabis plants.

Police were given the tip-off and executed a search warrant at the property on Ingleburn Road in Leppington on Thursday morning.

“We did receive information and that’s why we’ve executed a warrant today,” Acting Inspector Mark Landrigan said.

“The plants are in a growth stage from babies to mature … it is a large amount of plants.

“It’s becoming an established area so it is quite brazen.”

The three men fled from the property but were apprehended nearby.

Paramedics had to treat one of the men for a dog bite during the arrest.

The men were aged 23, 39 and 43.

It was a stunning haul for police with over 5000 plants.

Cannabis is largely illegal in Australia but it has been federally legalised for medicinal use as of 2016.
In November 2024, the Greens proposed a piece of legislation that would have legalised cannabis across Australia and would have allowed Australian citizens over the age of 18 to grow up to six plants per household and share homegrown cannabis products with others.

It also proposed individuals would be able to possess up to 50 grams of cannabis.

The bill was voted down in the Senate 13 to 24 against the legislation.

While it was the first time federal parliament had voted on legislation regarding recreational cannabis, Senator David Shoebridge vowed it would not be the last.

The government’s Australian Institute of Health and Welfare also revealed that in 2022-23, one in four Australians aged between 20-29 had used cannabis in the previous 12 months.
