Is Steven Miles eyeing the exit? Or is there no one to replace him as Labor leader?

Those questions, and more, are being asked as pressure grows on the former Queensland Premier following months of factional party brawls.

“A few steps into a four-year stint on the opposition benches, Labor is still struggling to find its groove – to be negative while constructive and win relevance while being irrelevant,” Courier-Mail state political editor Hayden Johnson wrote.

“Mr Miles can already put Queensland Premier on his CV and might already be questioning whether he has the drive and work ethic to put Labor back in the hunt.

“Murmurs about Mr Miles’s leadership turned into whispers last week when he absconded from the Legislative Assembly during two critical debates.”

“ … Spurred by a government eager to expose cracks, Labor MPs are quietly questioning whether Mr Miles will lead them to the 2028 state election.”

So who could replace Mr Miles if a change is made?

“United Workers’ Union boss Gary Bullock still holds the power and ensures there is no threat to Mr Miles while his support remains,” Johnson wrote.

“Mr Bullock is unsold on Shannon Fentiman, the woman earmarked as the most likely successor.

“It’s widely viewed Ms Fentiman, while formidable, is too Left for Labor to win back swathes of regional Queensland.”

Who else?

“Meaghan Scanlon’s star is burning brighter after her tight election victory in Gaven and there is a sense in Labor she could become a leadership contender this term,” he wrote.

“ … If Deputy Leader Cameron Dick doesn’t have the numbers to win the parliamentary vote, the Right considers it best to keep Mr Miles in and Ms Fentiman out.”

Some readers said it was a choice among a bad bunch, while others said it was time to look at up-and-comers in Labor’s ranks.

In an online poll of more than 2000 readers, Mr Miles was the least preferred of the four options to hold Labor’s leadership.

I’d be eyeing off 2036 if was the Labor Party. No way, no hope, no chance in 2028, 2032 is the Olympic year, if the Libs don’t mess that up, they’ll get another turn. Then like all electorates, they’ll turn on the incumbent and vote the opposition in.

Maybe if Labor returned to its grassroots, they may have a chance.

While they care more for wrong doers and push perverse policies that undermine the stability of our society, they do not deserve to be in any position of authority.
