Queensland is sliding towards a US-style tent city “embarrassment”, according to many across the state.
Readers have reacted strongly to news that in April more tents were appearing across Brisbane.
The homeless made themselves at home in the middle of the city, ensuring the crisis gripping Queensland will not go unnoticed in the state’s capital.
As joggers and cyclists traversed the nearby Bicentennial Bikeway, some of the homeless climbed the rocks to set themselves up away from prying eyes.
Q Shelter executive director Fiona Caniglia said it was understandable that people congregated where they can be sheltered, like near bridges in the City.
It comes after Premier Steven Miles visited a tent city in Rothwell in his own electorate north of Brisbane, which housed up to 30 working Queenslanders and young families.
In May a shocking 91 per cent of Brisbane suburbs were in rental crisis after rents rose as much as 25 per cent, and regional Queensland is close behind, with calls for emergency measures to stop a disaster.
SuburbTrends founder Kent Lardner said “the whole Greater Brisbane region is in a mess” and could see more tent cities emerge in the lead-up to the Olympics unless action was taken now to increase publicly funded housing.
Many readers, including those on Facebook, said the tent city saga was another sign the city is turning into “one of the slums in the US”.
“We’ll be same as the US. The tent cities are there huge,” Peter claimed.
The root of the issue, according to some, was the lack of action by politicians.
“Vote labor and this is what you get. They have no answers to the problems they’ve created,” Dork wrote.
Others said the 2032 Olympic Games – and the money being spent on it – is another roadblock to positive change.

Airbus albo doesn’t care about the average Australian.. too busy letting in so many people from overseas ..it’s unfortunately going to get worse.. whatever happened to a once great country.

Regional qld isn’t close behind, it’s the same all over

I feel so sad to see so many homeless people. We used hotels during the covid crisis. This is a crisis, too. We need to look at every option to get people into homes and shelters.
Vandemonian
People have been camping there for years – this is not new!
Malaroy
Let’s be honest, it isn’t the solution to offer each of these people a unit, house and walking away. They have significant complexities and need supported housing for long periods. 24 hr intensive support otherwise they are likely to fail in their unit, house and circle back to being homeless.
Bernie
It’s the LNP’s fault, Campbell Newman did it, nothing to do with 30 years (less 3) of ALP government in Qld.

We’re like the US!

Becoming like Skid Row in LA.

Australia under a social Labor government is fast becoming like the west coast of the United States

We’ll be same as the US. The tent cities are there huge.

Welcome to Australia’s version of San Francisco.

The federal Labor Government allowed a record 520,000 new immigrants into the country in 2023 whilst some Australians aren’t able to find adequate accommodations.

It’s no coincidence that wherever left wing politicians are in power – crime, poverty and tent cities spring up. Just look at democrat run cities like San Francisco in the US. People knew it wouldn’t be easy under Albanese but people still voted Labor in.
Another Olympics mess
Mel
Stop immigration, look after your own back yard and people Government. Before you open the flood gates to others. It is not rocket science, we do not have the housing or commodities Great look for the Olympics, lets all pitch a tent, in protest. Welcome to Brisbane.
Kathleen01
pitch their tents on the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium then something will get done
Dog with a bone
How much are we spending on the Olympics? Hmmm … seems we could use that money somewhere else …
Ozi
If this tent city continues it will become an embarrassment during the Olympics. This is almost third world stuff.

The rich get richer. Cant wait to spend that 10 billion on a two week sports carnival
I blame pollies

We all voted one way or another so now we can all pay the price for our stupidity.
William
This what Socialism looks like people. Wait until they have finished with their agenda. We will all be dependant on the Government and work solely for them. Labor/Greens are ruining this country.
Dork
Vote labor and this is what you get. They have no answers to the problems they’ve created.
Gary
It is wonderful to sit back & watch Labor/Greens housing plan coming to get her. lol. One question though, why do the homeless congregate in the slums. Plenty of work in the regions, plenty accom in caravan parks, Showgrounds etc. And no doubt all Labor/Green supporters. Wake up to yourselves.
Dave
Labor and Miles always talk big and they’re always GUNNA DO something while the media is highlighting the issues and then forget about the issues and move onto the next big embarrassment and failure to put the fire out without ever fixing them.
Anne
100% Albanese’s fault. He is the one who has thrown the doors open and welcomed them in from all over the world. Daily they continue to pour in. What a disaster this government has been. 3rd world country, here we are. Breaks my heart that our forebears fought and died for this.
