‘Not what it used to be’: Qantas no longer the spirit of Australia

One mum’s anger at her long-haul Qantas flight has sparked a furious response from across Australia – and it’s not good news for the national carrier.

News Corp columnist Ann Wason Moore took aim after a flight from Los Angeles to Brisbane that she claimed was sub-par.

“It may still be one of the safest airlines in the world, but Qantas’ reputation is crashing across the globe,” she wrote.

“ … I got what I paid for … an older plane with repairs needed to one of our seats, outdated USB charger tech and tape patching things up in the toilet. To be fair, the flight itself was safe and smooth and the staff were nothing but wonderful, but the hardware?

“It had been through some hard wear indeed over the course of its dozen-plus years.

“To start with, one of our seats was broken.

“ … When a steward came to assess my daughter’s seat, accomplished by throwing his body violently backward while pressing that little silver button, he apologised and muttered it was time the plane was retired to the junk heap.”

Many across Australia chimed in with their own experiences with Qantas.

Some claimed the airline has been in decline for years; others said there are wider issues at play.

Regardless, most agreed things can only improve.

WHAT YOU SAID

Spot on!

Alfi

Their prices are premium but the experience sucks. Rather Virgin

Brendan

Anyone saying Qantas is good is flying either business or first class.

Ian

I’d like to hear the Qantas CEO’s reply after these comments have been read. Maybe a prize for the best excuse from one of their spin-doctors?

david

I travelled overseas to spend time with my mother who was dying – plane arrived late and business class were transferred immediately – I was told to overnight and “we’ll get you in the first flight in the morning and you’ll be fine … you’ll get to see her”. I didn’t. She died that night. Qantas staff are as stale & disinterested as they often look

Hopeful

Not hard to see how Joyce “earned” his bonuses. Cut cost and then bail out.

Richard

Qantas has been run into the ground by management even now they still have not learned a thing, And taking advantage of the frequent flyers lounge but then again if you flew business class on Emirates or Qatar or even Thai airways is better than Qantas. It is a brand that is no longer held in high regard any more.

Qantas is second-rate

LFC

Singapore Airlines is the pinnacle. Wi-Fi, new aircraft, decent food, on time and safe. Just not a good option from Australia to USA.

Forever Pending Cancelled

Recently flew Qantas to Japan and return. Same issues, faulty seat that wouldn’t recline properly and seat in front of me that reclined just about into a day-bed. Staff great but couldn’t resolve the issues nor shift me as flight was full. Definitely need new planes.

Steve

You can thank Alan Joyce for your experience.

I’ve been a commercial pilot for 30 years and have flown every airline imaginable. The decline in Qantas over the last 10-15 years is remarkably stark and sad.

Hugh

I always tried to book Qantas for all my flights. Now I avoid them.

gd@gc

I was a Qantas gold member in the early 2000s and put up with crap planes and crap cabin crew for years blindly because I wanted to keep my status.

There are wider issues

R

And Qantas gave how much to the YES campaign? Would have fixed a lot of these problems…. get your priorities right Qantas. go woke, go broke.

Pending king

Qantas has transitioned from being a well run airline to being a support mechanism for any and all of the latest politically correct causes.

David

iPads for entertainment or drop down screens … fair dinkum. Did they sell their fleet to survive Covid and roll out the relics.

COLETTE

Spent too much time pandering to minority groups and trying to be politically correct. Oh and paying the bosses far too much.

Pat

Even brand new aircraft have ashtrays around lavatories for when the crew need to order an unruly smoker to stub out, you’d rather it went in there than the waste bin full of paper. Not that I’m excusing these aircraft that have had their time.

Elena

Qantas has being going downhill for years. Except of course with their prices, particularly in regional Australia (their birthplace) where there are no other options. I choose any other carrier nowadays.
