Opinion: Story Bridge fix requires every level of government

Brisbane’s Story Bridge is in dire need of the same renovation as the state’s old Queenslander homes, writes Adrian Schrinner. VOTE IN OUR POLL

Anyone who owns an old Queenslander knows their home will inevitably need a major restoration.

You can keep up all the proper maintenance by painting, fixing the floors and plugging the leaks.

But age ensures a restoration is inevitable and you’ll need to replace the roof, renovate the kitchen or redo the stumps.

The much-loved Story Bridge is just like every other old Queenslander. It’s 85 years old and was built during the Depression to only last 100 years.

While experts recently observed council had been an excellent steward of the bridge, they also said it was time to plan a long-term restoration so it lasts another 100 years.

The report confirmed we invested more than $120m in maintenance over the past two decades.

What it certainly didn’t say, despite some suggestions, is that the Story Bridge is falling down.

So what next? We’re already planning a long-term restoration with a business case underway with the support of the Federal Government.

We’ve ruled out tolls, even though that’s what they’re doing down south with the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

We’ve also ruled out a rates levy because it would be unfair for our residents when nearly half the bridge’s traffic comes from outside Brisbane.

Instead, we’ll be proposing sustained investment from all three levels of government.

I’m confident all levels of government will want to be on the right side of history in 15 years when Brisbane celebrates the bridge’s 100th birthday.

For years, we’ve been closely and consistently monitoring the condition of the bridge because that’s the responsible thing to do.

The latest report from independent experts says the bridge’s separate footpath structures can continue for between two to five years before they need to be replaced.

However, out of an abundance of caution, we’ve closed the paths and are asking people to use the popular new Kangaroo Point Bridge nearby or the frequent CityCat services.

Meanwhile, we’re fast-tracking the delivery of a temporary deck which will ensure both paths are reopened within months.

Our council has a strong track record of working with other levels of government to deliver major projects, including restoring City Hall.

We’ll do the same for the Story Bridge and ensure this iconic Queenslander can continue to serve our community for another century.
