Editor’s view: One thing certain in race to save city icon

If Brisbane City Council can’t get money out of the state and federal governments for an upgrade of the Story Bridge, the other options are a toll or special levy. Either way, we know who’ll ultimately pay the price.

Story Bridge may be unusable in 20 years

Many of our readers would be familiar with the financial squeeze that Brisbane City Council is currently experiencing.

Our readers may be putting cash away for a big event in the future – maybe a wedding – while keeping up with the bills and trying to pay down some debt as well.

Then, out of the blue, the roof starts leaking. You’ve called the builders to take a look but you just know the repairs are going to coast an arm and a leg.

And so it is with Adrian Schrinner’s BCC. They are currently trying to work their way out of a budget crisis while planning for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. And now they have to face the fact that the iconic Story Bridge is nearing the end of its life. A new report on the bridge obtained by The Courier-Mail reveals it only has 20 years left if there are no major renovations. The popular footpaths have already been closed with no reopening date.

No one knows what a restoration will cost but as the tradies say “this won’t be cheap!” But like our homeowner with the leaky roof, BCC will have to find the money.

Of course the council will appeal to the state and federal governments, but they have their own budget problems.

The other options are a toll on the bridge – the first since 1947 – or a special levy.

One thing is certain, however they fund this unexpected project. You will be the one that’s paying.
