Hailing from a small town in Tasmania, the Grammy-nominated band Alphawolf feels a strong kinship with live music starved North Queenslanders, who they are promising to deliver an unforgettable night of brutal entertainment this May.
Defining themselves as a “heavy” band, while others lump them into the genres of metalcore and deathcore, Alpha Wolf was founded in 2013, and hit their stride after relocating to Melbourne three years later.
Following a steady upwards trajectory in popularity, the band now leads Australia’s new generation of heavy bands, where they were now securing slots on European and American festivals, and were currently touring through China and south east Asia.
Speaking on the eve of their biggest and most ambitious tour of regional Australia, accompanied by English metalcore band Malevolence, Alpha Wolf guitarist Sabian Lynch was ready to unleash a spectacular show on Townsville. .
“We always saw bigger things within ourselves, and knew we had to drive from the get go … we just wanted to see how far we could take it, and it’s gone bigger and further beyond anything we ever could have imagined,” Lynch said.
“We’re always pinching ourselves because we’ve now achieved more than so many bands that we looked up to in the early days.”
One year since they released their latest album Half Living Things, Lynch recalled how they secured the services of legendary musician and actor Ice-T, who guested on their song Sucks 2 Suck.
“It was kind of a joke in our group chat, because we had this section on a song that just needed attitude so our vocalist suggested it as a joke,” he said.
“Then our manager in the US was like, ‘well, I know his manager’, and from that point, it got real boring, legal and contracts and this and that, and she just made it happen.
“A lot of people thought it was AI … (but) we got the real thing, so that was really cool, and then to see it get nominated for a Grammy was ridiculous.”
No strangers to North Queensland after touring twice previously, Lynch fondly recalled how fun and appreciative people were in this region.
“They’re starved for live music or heavy bands in general, international acts even, and they’ve probably been waiting for this since the day it’s been announced, because they don’t get that much,” he said.
“I love it up there, and the shows get really, really rowdy, we never know what to expect in those sorts of areas, so we’re mega excited.
“I can’t remember if it was Townsville or Mackay, but someone attempted to backflip off the barrier. He got a big run up, ran up to the barrier, and his foot slid over the top, and he absolutely hurt himself downstairs, which we got on video.”
Alpha Wolf, with special guests Malevolence (UK) will play in Townsville’s Otherwise Bar on Friday, May 2.
