A man accused of attacking a 72 year-old man with a machete will make a move for bail in the coming weeks.

Darwin man Baydon Clarke, 42, appeared in court charged with recklessly endangering serious harm and unlawfully causing serious harm following a violent incident in Palmerston last week.

Police say that at about 6.10pm on July 18, a unit complex on Moulden Terrace was playing loud music.

Police say when an elderly neighbour approached the residence to complain, Mr Clarke, armed with a machete, emerged from the home and allegedly assaulted him.

The man was taken to Palmerston Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his hands and shoulders.

Meanwhile, police negotiators and the Territory Response Group deployed to the scene to try and detain Mr Clarke, who had retreated into his unit.

Eventually Mr Clarke surrendered to authorities and was brought into custody.

On Tuesday morning, his matter was brought before Darwin Local Court.

Prior to entering the dock, Mr Clarke’s lawyer warned Judge Tanya Fong Lim her client was feeling “unwell”.

“I’m innocent,” Mr Clark said as he entered the courtroom.

It was indicated Mr Clarke will seek bail.

Mr Clarke’s lawyer said her client was seeking bail.

“They’re working against me, all these people,” Mr Clarke said in the background.

Details of the alleged facts were not read to the court, however Judge Fong Lim noted more charges had been laid against Mr Clarke since his arrest.

It was heard Mr Clarke had been charged with assaulting a member of the police force and disorderly behaviour in a police station - both related to his time in custody.

No pleas were entered.

Judge Fong Lim set a preliminary examination mention for September 17 and adjourned the matter to August 12 for a bail application.

As he was being led away from the dock, Mr Clarke said “I knew I wasn’t getting bail”.

“Feed my dogs please,” Mr Clarke called out to his supporters.

“I love ya’s.”
