Phat Phuc could be taking over the world.
The Wauchope pie shop with the memorable punny name has upped the ante on rude wordplay by launching a range of merchandise to compliment its store-made pastries.
Over the next few weeks the store will be stocking up on t-shirts, stickers and stubby holders proudly displaying the slogan ‘I got Phucc’d in Wauchope’ along with a cartoon drawing of the shop’s jolly rotund baker holding up a steaming pie.
The store name went viral online after the shop opened in June with owner Matthew Reid revealing he came up with it at the last minute, even though corporate regulator ASIC refused to register it as the company title.
Mr Reid previously told the Daily Telegraph he received only a few complaints about the risque joke with the overwhelming response being positive.
With the new merchandise slogan Mr Reid said there hadn’t been any pushback so far.
“I haven’t had any complaints about that but it’s early days at the moment because I only posted it last night,” he said.
“No one’s said anything, the locals have gotten behind me that’s all that matters.”
The bakery is proving phenomenally successful with Mr Reid, who smokes the meat fillings as well as making all the pastry, selling about 600 pies and sausage rolls a day at the Wauchope shop and another outlet in Port Macquarie, also on the NSW Mid-North Coast.
“It’s a lot of late nights at the moment but we are getting there,” he said.
People have been coming from far and wide to try his wares with Mr Reid saying he had around 30 to 40 Harley Davidsons out the front of Phat Phuc over the weekend with a motorcycle appreciation club riding up from Sydney to indulge themselves.
“They told me I had the ‘best pies ever, so it was well worth the ride’,” Mr Reid said.
Asked what was next after branching out into merchandise, Mr Reid said he had “absolutely no idea”.
However, he insisted Phat Phuc was not destined to become a chain of, well, Phat Phucs along the east coast.
“God no, I am way too tired too tired for that,” he said.
