A motorist who narrowly avoided being taken out by a careening truck, which crossed several lanes before smashing through a median strip and collecting trees, says she is lucky to be alive.

The nasty truck crash on Monday, just south of the Qld-NSW border in the Tweed, caused massive headaches for motorists when they became caught in multi-hour delays after the carnage caused chaos in both north and southbound lanes.

Shortly after 12pm on Monday, sources say the truck seemingly crossed from the southbound lanes before careening through a median strip, smashing through a tree and stopping in the northbound lanes – about one kilometre south of the Banora Point, Tweed Shire exit.

Resident Kyla Rae took to Facebook in the aftermath of the crash, saying she was “seconds” from impact.

“I was seconds away from this (the truck) hitting me,” she wrote.

“Watched the whole thing in my rearview mirror. Happened just 100m behind me. I took over him only 10 seconds before. He was heading southbound and hit trees or signs then veered straight into northbound lanes.

“We are very, very lucky.”

The truck crash was impacting traffic in all directions as police and emergency services arrived on scene about 1pm.

Photos from witnesses to the crash show vehicles pulled over on the side of the highway and a fallen tree blocking the roadway. The truck appeared badly damaged and a witness says the driver had a bloodied face.

A NSW Police media spokesperson said the driver had been transported to hospital in a stable condition.

A heavy vehicle tow truck was en route to the scene about 2pm.

At 4pm, police advised all northbound lanes were open and the truck was towed.

One southbound lane remains closed while police and emergency services finish clearing the scene.
