THE Gold Coast Titans will look to tap into Tweed’s rugby league talent after 160 kids turned out for an NRL coaching clinic in Cudgen this week.

Kids rolled in to receive first-hand coaching and tips from a full Titans squad, who also conducted training while kids and fans watched on.

After identifying the Tweed as a fertile rugby league area, Titans star and captain, William Zillman, said the team had worked hard to cement their brand in the region.

“The Titans have really tried to sink our roots into these Northern Rivers areas in the last few years,” he said.

“It’s a great resource for us down here and there’s some very talented kids.”

Kids between five and 13 took part in the rotating activities at Tuesday’s clinic and Zillman said the club was buoyed by the level of talent the region could produce.

“There’s a lot of talent on the Gold Coast and in the Northern Rivers and we’ve got a couple of guys from here, Ryan James and Cameron Cullen, that have come through the ranks, so it’s exciting,” he said.

The Titans’ clinic catered to kids of all abilities and background, regardless of whether they had previously had an introduction to the sport.

Zillman said that while it was great to see the level of talent, the clinics purpose was to promote fitness and fun.

“The important thing is that they’re all enjoying themselves and having a good day as that’s what these camps are designed to do,” he said.

The Titans will look to make the school holiday clinics an annual event, after Tuesday’s turnout which exceeded expectations and matched numbers from the Titans’ Gold Coast clinic held last week in Helensvale.

Northern Rivers NRL development officer Mike Donnelly said the clinic was “massive” for the region.

“The Titans’ players mingled with the kids and were great with them, they’ve been most impressive,” he said.

“We had kids come from everywhere and I’ve got no doubt it could become an annual event.

“All the kids that registered now become Titans members, so they’ll be getting supporters for life.”

The clinic, held from 10am at Cudgen Fields, was an expansion of the Burleigh Clinic the club runs from June to July annually, which attracts up to 500 kids.
