THE Gold Coast Titans are heading to the Tweed for a special school holiday footy clinic that will be a first for the region.
Identifying the Northern Rivers as a fertile rugby league area, Titans staff and players will bring their NRL School Holiday Footy Clinic to Cudgen on Tuesday, for a day of footy and fun.
Titans development manager Darren Robb said the club saw the Tweed as the perfect destination for their specialised player training and coaching clinic.
“We’re targeting the southern end of the Gold Coast and the Northern Rivers and Cudgen (will be) a first for the Titans,” Robb said.
“Cudgen have good facilities, we’ve had junior and state league games there before and it’s a good place for the boys.
“The Northern Rivers is a great catchment area that we’ve had a great relationship with, and we wanted the opportunity to bring players to them (kids) in their own backyard instead of them having to come to the Gold Coast.”
The clinic, open to boys and girls between five and 13, is an expansion of the Burleigh Clinic the club runs from June to July annually, attracting around 500 kids.
They not only learn specialised tips and tricks, but have first-hand access to players.
“They’ll receive NRL coaching from Titans staff and the NRL squad will also be training at the same time, so they’ll be able to watch them train and also join in with the Titans in some activities they’ll be running,” Robb said.
“There’ll be a lot of activities that will be rotated throughout the day and the Titans’ guys will also come and join in with the kids’ activities.
Robb said the clinics are open to all kids between five and 13, regardless of ability or sporting background.
“They don’t have to be registered with a club, it’s all about them getting out of the house and coming along and enjoying themselves,” he said.
Players will be available for plenty of photos and autographs, with kids to receive a clinic shirt and Titans packs at the end of the day.
The cost is $40 per child and kids are advised to bring a hat, water bottle and wear joggers.
There are currently around 80 kids signed up, which the Titans are hoping to get up to the 150 mark before Tuesday.
