Regional NSW’s best young cricketers recently stole the limelight with an excellent display of cricket during the Country Colts carnival held on the Central Coast.

Greater Illawarra proved to be the best team in the bush after going through the week undefeated to take out the 2024 title.

With under-17 and under-19 NSW Country teams to be selected for the upcoming national championships, players were out to impress selectors and some young guns certainly enhanced their reputations with some strong performances.

In light of this, we’ve crunched the numbers and ranked the best batters and bowlers in the tournament. Using the tables below, search by player name or team, and click on each heading title to sort the data by category to see who came out on top.

A couple of Newcastle openers led the way with the bat as Austen Hiskens and Lucas Vincent finished the competition as the leading runscorers with 266 and 254 runs respectively.

The impressive result was helped by an incredible final game against Southern Districts that saw the pair put on a remarkable 289-run partnership en route to a massive team total of 346, with Hiskens scoring 116 and Vincent blasting an incredible 172 from just 127 balls.

Elsewhere, Greater Illawarra captain Angus Campbell was brilliant as he led his side to victory, scoring three half-centuries as he piled on 222 runs, while North Coastal’s Sam Weir and Western’s Harry Roscarel both cracked 200 runs with excellent tournaments for their respective teams.

BOWLING

It was a tournament where the spinners created plenty of damage as five of the top-seven wicket takers were tweakers.

Greater Illawarra leg spinner Ryan Cattle topped the list with 12 wickets, which included a five-wicket haul against North Coastal to kick off the week before finishing with another four against Western as his team went through undefeated.

Second on the list was North Coastal’s James Lobb, who also finished with tournament on a high after taking nine of his 11 wickets in his last two games, including a matchwinning spell against Newcastle in round four.

Elsewhere, Western’s Blayde Burke, Newcastle’s Tyler McInnes and Riverina leggie Hunter Hall all did well in a sign that Country NSW’s spinning stocks are strong.

As for the quicks, Tamworth pair Thomas Holmes and Blake Scicluna starred for Central North, while Newcastle’s Jonah Roser and Riverina’s Jay Lavis were also impressive for their respective sides.
