A former Gold Coast cafe baron was told to “f*** off” out of a sleepy NSW village because she was bringing too many people into the town.

Surfer Luke Deane, 42, pleaded guilty in Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday to attempt to stalk or intimidate intending to cause harm.

He abused the co-owner of Cubby Bakehouse at the Shell service station at Chinderah on May 27, telling her to “take your shop and f--- right back to Broadbeach”. He also told her she had “ruined this town, take all your sh-- and f--- off right back to where you came from”.

He shouted “you heard me, you ruined this town, you brought all these people down here and ruined it and we hate you, and you need to f--- off”.

He continued yelling at her, adding “I know where you live”, which made the woman frightened.

The victim recorded his vehicle details and reported the incident to police. While giving her statement she broke down, sobbing and shaking.

Two witnesses attested to what happened.

Police spoke to Deane on June 3. He said he was “in a bad mood” that day due to a hip injury and that he and others were unhappy with the traffic caused by people attending the Cubby cafe.

He admitted to “giving her a gobful” and was apologetic.

His lawyer said Deane was fairly well known in the Chinderah area due to having a famous family name in surfing.

The defence said Deane felt like he was “watching himself as he gave the woman a gobful”. “He says it was in an almost out-of-body experience as everyone in the service station watched him going, ‘what are you doing, Luke?’.”

The defence said this was a side effect of a medication he was on which had made him overly aggressive and his client had nothing on his record of a violent nature.

Deane was spared a criminal conviction and placed on a two-year conditional release order.
The Cubby Bakehouse was set up in 2018.

The owners were considered true royalty of the Gold Coast’s cafe scene, operating three venues across the city. They had success with Paddock Bakery, Bam Bam Bakehouse at Mermaid Beach and Custard Canteen at Tallebudgera before crossing the border.
