A popular North Coast indoor recreation centre that draws people from across northern NSW has huge support in the community for its plans to expand.

Newton Denny Chapelle has lodged a $2 million development application with Ballina Shire Council on behalf of Climbing Jungle Ballina.

The much-loved indoor recreation centre on Smith St West Ballina has visitors from across the Northern Rivers and even further afield.

It’s described as “one of the best activities available for all round mental, emotional and physical fitness for all ages”, with “nothing else like it around”. The applicants describe patrons as “more than a community – a family”,

The development proposed for West Ballina would include demolition works, a new building, vehicle parking, signage and landscaping.

“The proposal provides for the construction of a 243 sqm building west of the existing industrial building to be utilised as a movement studio,” the application states.

The proposal also includes a courtyard and new amenities.

Also included is a 179 sqm area with a climbing wall on the existing eastern building, along with a 153 sqm bouldering area.

“The building will comprise of trim deck roof sheeting, corrugated custom orb wall cladding, painted FC sheeting and painted steel and concrete columns,” developers state.

“The flooring will comprise of a soft fall-style matting over the entire floor.”

Patrons and staff will have access to a mezzanine for access, as well as general safety, assistance and instructions “dependent on the style of climb”.

The revamped Climbing Jungle Ballina would be accessible via an accessible lift, as well as stairs and longer opening hours are also part of the proposal
