A 12-year-old boy already on bail has been charged over a burglary in which an 82-year-old woman was slashed with a knife and an 89-year-old man was attacked with a large stick in the latest incident of youth crime in the regions.
Police allege five boys broke into the elderly couple’s Moree home in the state’s north at about 3.15am on Saturday armed with knives and threatened them before they were injured.
Both were taken to Moree Hospital in stable condition, with the man treated for injuries to his back, while a third male resident at the house was uninjured.
About 5pm on Saturday, a 13-year-old boy was arrested in Moree and a short time later, the 12-year-old boy was also taken into custody nearby. Later that night, another 13-year-old was arrested at Moree Police station.
They were all charged with aggravated break and enter and committing a serious indictable offence using violence, while the 12-year-old was also charged with breach of bail.
All three were refused police bail to appear via AVL before a children’s court. Police are still investigating the incident.
The Moree break and enter was one of a couple of alarming youth crime incidents in the regions over the weekend.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy is fighting for life after allegedly being run down by a car while on a stolen motorbike in Dubbo.
Police claim a 21-year-old woman saw two people on her stolen motorbike riding through a park on Saturday night when she gave chase in her Nissan SUV, mounting the footpath and hitting the bike, trapping the pillion passenger under the vehicle.
Police, who were on the other side of the park at the time, raced to the scene where they freed the trapped 16-year-old boy with the aid of paramedics.
He was later flown to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition.
The motorcycle rider fled the scene before police arrived, but officers arrested the Nissan driver as she allegedly tried to leave.
She was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital for mandatory testing before being brought to Dubbo Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, driving in a dangerous manner and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
She was granted bail to appear at Dubbo Local Court on February 10, and her licence was suspended.
The rider of the bike is still being sought by police.
It comes over nine months into a temporary 12-month bail reform by the NSW government, which has introduced a test for magistrates weighing up bail for young offenders.
Repeat offenders aged 14 to 18 who are on bail for break and enter or car theft offences must now convince a magistrate to have high confidence they will not commit a serious offence if granted bail, while previously a magistrate could only deny bail if they believed a person posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending.
