Taronga Zoo Sydney announces birth of five lion cubs to Maya and Ato

Taronga Zoo has welcomed five African lion cubs into the world and while visitors aren’t allowed yet, the zoo has launched a “cub-cam” where you can watch them grow virtually.

Taronga Zoo is bursting with pride — or should that be a pride — after announcing the birth of five lion cubs.

It’s the first time in 18 years the zoo has had baby lions and the secret of their arrival can finally be revealed five weeks after the cubs were delivered.

Taronga Zoo Sydney has announced the birth of five African lion cubs.

Mum Maya has given birth before at Taronga’s Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo, while these are the first cubs for dad Ato, who celebrated his fourth birthday at the same time.

The three girls and two boys are gaining as much as 1kg in weight a week.

“The last time we had lion cubs was way back in 2003. This is incredible,” carnivore supervisor Louise Ginman said.

“Every day we’re seeing changes in them. They’re starting to become much more playful (and) so much more agile, so very soon they’re going to be out and running around. They’re doing really well.

“This is amazing that we have beautiful, little lion cubs who are healthy, bouncy little babies full of life and energy. It’s very exciting for all of us.”

With Taronga shut thanks to the lockdown, the zoo is launching a “Cub Cam” for the public to virtually access the enclosure.

For a small donation you can watch the young cubs learn to find their paws.

“It’s a beautiful, inside unique view into the raising of these cubs … and you’ll get to watch those cubs grow and develop. This is like a sneak peek, something that people don’t get to see. It’s so exciting,” Ms Ginman said.

“It’ll feel just like you’re here, even though we’re not open at the moment.”
