A daily motorbike ride turned into tragedy for Tamworth teenager Kobi Murray when he collided with a minibus – changing his life in an instant.

The circumstances surrounding the crash that occurred around 4pm on June 20 at Loomberah Rd, Calala are currently under police investigation.

Family friend Samantha Valentine has recalled the day of the horrific crash, a week after the boy’s seventeenth birthday.

“Kobi decided to take a ride on his motorbike which he did every day,” Ms Valentine said.

“Everything stopped,” Ms Valentine said.

“Kobi woke up dripping in petrol and so completely consumed in pain that the only thing he could do was scream.”

Ms Valentine described the teen as “the kind of sunshine you didn’t know your day was missing”.

The family friend described his injuries, both physical and emotional, as ones that will “affect him for the rest of his life”.

He has already had two surgeries — one on his legs which is now held together by plates and screws and one on both his wrists.

And after suffering two collapsed lungs, burns, and broken arms, Kobi faces a gruelling road ahead.

Ms Valentine has started a Go Fund Me fundraiser to help Kobi’s family at this time as his father, Brett Murray and grandparents stay by his side.

Police urge anyone with dashcam/mobile phone footage or information about the crash to call Tamworth police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

With police investigations under way, this publication is not suggesting either party is at fault in relation to the crash.
