Sydneysiders can now get a glimpse at the future look of the six new Western Sydney Airport stations after Sydney Metro unveiled its final designs for the highly-anticipated transport hubs.
Giant glass structures and earthy designs feature across the six stations at St Marys, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal and Bradfield, which will connect the city to the new international airport by mid-2027.
Sydney Metro said work to construct the metro stations is in “full swing” now the designs are finalised following community and stakeholder feedback to the plans presented during consultation.
The milestone marks the next step for the 23km Western Sydney Airport metro line between St Marys, the new city of Bradfield and the airport, which will include stops at the international and domestic terminals and the business park.
The transport project will cost $11 billion and was originally slated to open by late 2026 in time for the opening of the airport, but is now expected to carry its first passengers by April 2027 after work was delayed by industrial action.
In a statement released alongside the new designs, Sydney Metro said each station design will “complement the qualities” of the local Cumberland Plain landscape to “establish a sense of connection to “place, people and (the) communities of Western Sydney”.
“The final designs feature colours, textures and materials derived from Country and these will be experienced by passengers throughout stations, including communal areas like plazas, walkways and buildings,” the statement read.
“First Nations design professionals Djinjama, with lead architect Hassell, were engaged to lead the design process, and collaborated and engaged with key Knowledge Holders of Country throughout.”
Each station has its own unique design with Luddenham Station featuring an overhead, open air metro line entering into the precinct and St Marys surrounded by a hub of mid-density apartment blocks and shops.
It comes after Sydney Metro laid the first tracks for the new metro line at Luddenham on April 9, just north of a new rail bridge that will take metro services over the future M12 motorway.
Track laying is currently progressing north towards St Marys at a rate of 70 to 100 metres of track each day.
Once completed, the metro line will end at St Marys where the T1 North Shore and Western Line starts, connecting commuters to the CBD via a quick train interchange.
