What do a Netflix star, Coachella CEO, global authority on AI and the Co-Founder of Slack all have in common?
All four are headed to Australia for the inaugural South by Southwest Sydney (SXSW) in October, joining more than 700 panellists and global innovators in the Harbour City for the week long “festival of festivals”.
Traditionally held in the depths of Austin, Texas, this is the first time in 36 years the citywide festival that introduced Uber and Billie Eilish to the world has left the US.
Australian singers Go-Jo and Ashli are two of the 400 musical acts set to perform from beloved venues like the Lansdowne and the Lord Gladstone, the Hollywood and Chippo Hotels, to street and pop-up parties.
“It’s exciting as, I’ve heard about South by for years. Getting asked to play is an honour,” chart-topping Go-Jo said. “No other festival can put you in front of both industry people and fans.”
“I didn’t think it was possible to do one, let alone a second festival in Sydney,” Western Sydney and New Jersey-raised R & B artist Ashli added.
They join a festival alumni list that includes Lady Gaga, Barack Obama, Taika Waititi, Steven Spielberg, Prince and Snoop Dogg.
“It’ll be interesting to see how the culture translates,” Ashli said.
“I’m excited to see Aussie musicians put on that world platform. It provides access to the industry that otherwise overlooks them.”
Wristbands for complete access to all musical acts at SXSW Sydney cost $280 and go on sale Friday.
