Pro-Palestinian protesters surrounded Chris Minns’ Sydney electorate office while chanting “Zionists are terrorists” and “death to the IDF”, prompting the premier to say he is against such division in NSW.
In video footage circulating online, the protesters can be seen shouting “all the Zionists are terrorists”, “death, death to the IDF” and “Chris Minns, you can’t hide” outside the premier’s Kogarah electorate office on Saturday.
Mr Minns told The Daily Telegraph he was against people trying to sow division like this in NSW.
“Screaming for death on the streets of Kogarah at lunch time I would have thought is a pretty horrible way to spend an afternoon, but I have to say I’m unsurprised,” Mr Minns said.
“These chants say more about the protesters than they do about me, although I do object to them blocking my office’s entry and intimidating genuine constituents from accessing help.
“I’ll keep representing my community and standing up against hate and division in New South Wales.”
Australian Jewish Association chief executive Robert Gregory said protesters taking aim at Zionists was meant to intimidate them.
“These violent and inflammatory chants have no place in Australia,” Mr Gregory said upon viewing the footage.
“When protesters call for death, they reveal their true colours.
“The vast majority of Australian Jews identify as Zionists and these anti-Semitic chants are clearly aimed at intimidating Jews in this country.
“Zionism is simply the belief that the Jewish people have the same right to national self-determination as any other group.”
At one point during the rally, a man started rapping to cheers from the crowd, talking about “rising up” and “saving humanity”.
Another protester wore a bicycle helmet with writing on it that read: “I don’t trust pigs”.
Police said there were no incidents during the rally.
