Footage of a man tossing a flare on to the steps of the Sydney Opera House at last Monday’s pro-Palestine rally has been released as police attempt to track down anyone who broke the law at the event.
In the video a man can be seen picking up a smoking red flare before lobbing it towards the Opera House steps where police are standing, to the cheers of others in the crowd.
It was one of multiple flares lit at the rally, which started peacefully at Town Hall before hundreds marched down to the steps of the Opera House ahead of the Israeli flag being projected onto the iconic landmark following the horror Hamas assault on Israel which resulted in more than 1000 deaths.
Sections of the crowd chanted anti-Semitic slurs, burned the Israeli flag and lobbed projectiles including water-filled bottles at police.
Police subsequently established Strike Force Mealing to investigate unlawful activity committed during protests across Sydney.
In a statement, police appealed for the public’s help to identify the man.
“Police investigating unlawful protest activity last week have released CCTV images in an appeal for public assistance,” they said.
“As inquiries continue, strike force investigators have today released images of a man they wish to speak with as part of their inquiries.
“The man is described as being of medium to heavy build, with short dark hair and beard, and, at the time, he was wearing spectacles.
“The man is depicted in the vision wearing a black hooded jacket, grey pants, black shoes, and a black and white scarf.”
Police appealed for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
