Police have launched an investigation after a man was shot during an aggravated home invasion in Sydney’s west.

Emergency services were called to a property on Stafford St in Penrith shortly before 11.45pm on Sunday after reports of gunfire.

Officers were told three men had stormed the home before shooting the 26-year-old resident in the leg and fleeing.

Police provided initial first aid before paramedics treated the man, who was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene has been established at a block of townhouses, where the shooting took place, and detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Multiple teams of detectives arrived at the block of townhouses about 10am, as officers guarded the taped-off complex.

One local told The Daily Telegraph he heard “one shot and that was it.”

Another neighbour said the ordeal was “quite scary” for what’s normally a quiet street.

Detective Superintendent Trent King, said officers moved quickly on Sunday night and believe they came close to catching the alleged offenders as they attempted to return to the SUV.

“The police response was very swift, we believe that we actually intercepted them trying to get back to their SUV and as a result they’ve run away on foot,” he said.

“We do believe that this is a targeted attack.”

“The response last night and the ongoing response today highlights just how seriously we’re taking this.”

As inquiries continue, anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Nepean police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
