WHETHER your furry friend is a cat or dog it’s highly likely they are called Max.
Pet Tags, a Bondi-based company which sold about 60,000 name tags last year, found Max is the most popular name for dogs and the second most popular for cats, with Oscar edging into first place by a whisker.
More than 95,000 dogs were registered in NSW in the past year, bringing the s canine population to just above 2 million. The cat population is about a third of that.
Despite the timeless battle between dog-people and cat-people, owning an animal of either description leads to happier — and healthier — humans. The RSPCA found animal ownership led to almost $4 billion in savings to the state’s health system each year.
“At the end of the day pet ownership offers better health and it opens up the path to talk to other people.” RSPCA chief veterinarian Dr Magdoline Awad said.
“For a lot of people a companion gives them a reason to wake up in the morning.”
Last year 46,000 dogs and 49,000 cats were handed in to the RSPCA — a small increase on both numbers from the previous year but there was also a record increase in adoption rates.
“When you adopt a pet you are saving a life,” Dr Awad said.
