A hotel is edging closer to completion in a $230m project that is hoped will draw attention to a “special” southwest Sydney community known for its diversity and Asian fare.

The centrepiece of the Cabra-Vale Diggers Club redevelopment – the Novotel hotel – is edging closer to completion and has started accepting bookings.

The eight-storey hotel flanking the train line between Canley Vale and Cabramatta stations will house 140 rooms, a rooftop swimming pool and gym when it opens in November.

The transformed club will also have an Italian trattoria and steakhouse by chef Dany Karam, and District 8 serving Asian cuisine.

The landmark redevelopment coincides with the club’s 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated at a gala dinner in July when its new name will be revealed.

Signature Hotel Management Group will manage the mid-range Accor hotel.

“This is more than just a hotel – it’s a destination,” Cabra-Vale Diggers chief commercial officer Vicki Le said.

“Cabra-Vale Diggers is ready to play a leading role in shaping western Sydney’s future as a premier destination for both locals and visitors.’’

There will be 140 rooms at the hotel.

Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone has welcomed the facility which is hoped will plug the gap in hotel offerings in the area, with many workers visiting the “huge” Smithfield and Wetherill Park industrial areas relying on Parramatta accommodation as their closest option.

It will also be close to Canley Heights and Canley Vale’s special entertainment precincts – designated areas in the town centre to attract greater patronage and support local businesses by cutting red tape around noise, serving of alcohol and trading hours.

“The great thing about having a hotel and a night time entertainment precinct is they will work together to supercharge our economy,’’ Mr Carbone said.

“I think we can make our region of Cabramatta, Canley Vale, Canley Heights a really special tourist destination, and with the hotel opening it will allow people to enjoy our region, and that only adds to our economic wellbeing.’’

The former Cabramatta police station was demolished to make way for the hotel when construction started in 2018.

Along with business people visiting Fairfield’s industrial estates, the hotel is expected to draw those visiting the Fairfield area for its festivals and cultural attractions.

“The hotel won’t be busy because of the (Western Sydney) airport, the hotel will be busy because of the experiences people can have in Cabramatta,’’ Mr Carbone said.

“I think the redevelopment of the hotel is about creating jobs and supporting business, but the most important thing is having a night out in our own town.

“Sometimes you don’t realise what a special place we have – people come from all over the Sydney to celebrate our diversity and our great food.’’
