North Parramatta: McDonald’s, Stockland’s apartment complex on the backburner
A major developer’s ambitious plans to build a super-sized apartment complex atop a McDonald’s in Sydney’s west are in limbo.
North Parramatta McDonald’s is getting a $5.1m glow up but the mega-sized apartment towers once planned atop the eatery appear to be in limbo.
Plans were first floated in 2015 for 346 units over two towers above the popular golden arches restaurant at the corner of Church St and Victoria Rd.
A Stockland’s spokeswoman has confirmed it is no longer involved in the project while a McDonald’s representative said there were no updates to share and redirected inquiries to Stockland’s.
A Parramatta Council spokeswoman said there were no current development proposals with the council for the site.
The Planning Department – which must decide if projects worth more than $5m are approved or rejected – has also not received a proposal.
In October 2021, the council blasted McDonald’s and refused the drive-through lanes under the dual 31-storey tower proposed development.
But now the upgrade of the 42-year-old restaurant is under way, the future of the apartment complex appears to have been put on the backburner.
Maccas is pumping $5.1m into the renovation with a dual-lane drive-through, new dining room and amenities, a PlayPlace playground, and a newly positioned front counter, dedicated delivery room and McCafe.
The 86-seat restaurant will continue to operate 24 hours a day.
The McDonald’s is just outside the boundaries of the state government’s Church Street North rezoning proposal.
Under the plan for the 42-hectare site, there will be 2000 more homes and 12,000 jobs created along the Parramatta Light Rail, along with a Sydney University campus, with the potential for up to 25,000 students.
