A high-speed police pursuit on the M1 ended in chaos when a stolen car sped onto the wrong side of the motorway before colliding with a B-double truck.
Noah Clark, 28, was sentenced in Gosford Local Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to being carried in a conveyance taken without consent, supplying a prohibited drug, and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
His co-accused, Narjik Newman, 35, has been charged with driving recklessly or furiously in a dangerous manner, possessing a prohibited drug, failing to stop during a police pursuit, hindering or resisting a police officer, deemed supply of a prohibited drug, and driving a conveyance without the owner’s consent.
Mr Newman has not yet entered any pleas and is due to face court on April 17.
Clarke, from Kooringal, has an extensive criminal history across Australia and has previously served jail time for offences in NSW and other states. He is currently subject to a community corrections order.
According to police facts, on 14 January, Clarke was a passenger in a car stolen from Adamstown, which was being driven by Newman.
The vehicle allegedly had altered number plates and was travelling south on the M1 near Blue Haven when it came to the attention of police.
As the car approached the Wyong Road overpass exit, police pulled in behind it. The vehicle initially slowed when officers activated their sirens, but Newman then entered the breakdown lane, reaching speeds of 140 km/h while overtaking other vehicles, according to the police facts.
It is alleged Newman wove between all lanes of traffic at varying speeds between 90 km/h and 160 km/h.
According to police, he then entered the M1 on the wrong side of the road, travelling south in the northbound lanes.
A police air wing unit monitored the pursuit from above.
Newman is then alleged to have later performed a U-turn near the Mt White heavy vehicle inspection station and began travelling north in the correct direction.
As he approached the Peats Ridge exit, he attempted to evade road spikes, but a B-double truck collided with the rear of the vehicle, rendering it inoperable, police facts state.
Clarke exited the front passenger seat and attempted to flee but was detained on the side of the M1.
A search revealed he was in possession of 26 grams of 1,4-Butanediol, as well as a small amount of cannabis. He was taken to Gosford Police Station.
Clarke was sentenced to 15 months in jail and will be eligible for parole in November.
